水，君子也，其性冲、其质白、其味淡，其为用也，可以浣不洁者而使洁，即沸汤中投以油，亦自分别而不相混，诚哉君子也；油，小人也，其性滑、其质腻、其味浓，其为用也，可以污洁者而使不洁，倘滚油中投以水，必至激搏而不相容，诚哉小人也。
君子像水，性情谦虚冲淡，本质洁白，味平淡。而它的用处，可以使不洁的东西成为清洁，即使在滚烫的热水中放入油，二者亦不会混合，这就是君子的本性。小人像油，本质滑腻，味浓厚，它的用途可污染清洁之物，若在滚烫的油中放入水，二者必然相激而不相容， 这就是小人的本质。
没有什么比内心藏着一个未讲的故事更痛苦了。
