君子像水，性情谦虚冲淡，本质洁白，味平淡。而它的用处，可以使不洁的东西成为清洁，即使在滚烫的热水中放入油，二者亦不会混合，这就是君子的本性。小人像油，本质滑腻，味浓厚，它的用途可污染清洁之物，若在滚烫的油中放入水，二者必然相激而不相容， 这就是小人的本质。
