人君为舟车若此,故左右象之,是以其民饥寒并至,故为奸邪。奸邪多而刑罚深,刑罚深则国乱。君实欲天下治而恶其乱,当为舟车不可不节。
君子这样来造船车,所以属下都效法他,因此他的人民就会饥寒交迫,不得不做奸邪的事。奸邪的事情一多,刑罚就重,刑罚一重,国家就混乱。国君若真的希望天下太平而不希望天下大乱的话,如果要做船车,就不能不节俭。
