不可学、不可事而在人者谓之性，可学而能、可事而成之在人者谓之伪。是性、伪之分也。
荀子所说的“伪”，是“人为”的意思。天生就有的是“性”，是人力无法改变的；通过后天的学习、努力可以改变的，就是“伪”。所以荀子主张“化性起伪”，通过自己能掌控的力量来改变已成定数的东西。
