父母威严而有慈，则子女畏慎而生孝矣。
出自北齐·颜之推《颜氏家训·教子》。慈，慈爱。则，那么。畏慎，畏惧、谨慎。矣，句末语气助词。父母有威严也有慈爱，那么子女就会畏惧、谨慎而生孝顺之心。孝子是靠严格而慈祥的方法培养出来的，不是一味溺爱就能教育出来的。
译文：专门注重修养内心的人每天都会看到自己的不足，专门注重增长见识的人每天都会看到自己的长处。每天看到自己不足的人会逐渐变得有长处，每天看到自己有长处的人会逐渐变得有不足。
